Panerai

Panerai

In 1860, Giovanni Panerai opened the doors of a watchmaking shop in Florence – a simple action that would be the first word in the Panerai watch company’s story. Panerai watches are favoured for their military aesthetics, with details like the signature crown guard of a Panerai men’s watch being directly inspired by the brand’s history. One of the most popular pieces in its arsenal is the Panerai Radiomir, named after the luminescence that allows its wearer to see in the dark. This historic Officine Panerai watch was created in secret for the Italian navy in the ‘30s, kickstarting a relationship that would last until 1993 and culminate in the creation of the first Panerai Luminor. This, in turn, inspired another icon: the Panerai Submersible – an evolution of the design that could dive to 300 metres. Today, Panerai women’s watches take this legacy and run with it, combining Swiss watchmaking with unmistakable Italian style.

Few watchmakers can claim to have operated as a workshop, a shop, a school and even a supplier to the Italian Navy, with its models consequently covered by the Military Secrets Act until 1997, no less. But that’s Panerai for you: each of the brand’s impressive guises informs the rich tapestry of its heritage, in turn shaping its vision as it pushes forward into new eras.

In 2014 Panerai opened its Neuchâtel, Switzerland manufacture, a vast, state-of-the-art space in which its timepieces are ideated, tested and assembled. It’s here, in a region that holds one of the world’s oldest watchmaking traditions, that 250 people work in harmony to create every Panerai watch, pushing the boundaries of technical innovation in the process.
