Shiza Shahid: The Our Place Founder’s Top Five Dinner Party Tips
“Food is ingrained in our memories,” says Shiza Shahid, founder and CEO of cookware brand Our Place. “It’s something that we experience from – almost – the moment we are born, and it’s part of all the significant occasions that come after: from birthdays and holidays, to all those times when you come home from college and your mum has your favourite dish ready and waiting.”
There’s a reason that last point feels a little personal. When Shahid left her native Pakistan to study in America, she found herself missing the homecooked dishes of her youth. She founded Our Place on the philosophy that sharing a meal – whether it’s a slow-cooked masterpiece or something very simple – is a powerful way to connect with other people. “My husband and I literally found our place in America by inviting people to sit around our dinner table with us. That ritual of gathering is incredibly important to our lives. It’s how new friends become chosen family.”
Here, Shahid shares her top tips for hosting a successful dinner party (no Michelin-starred skills required). Want more advice on how to keep your guests happy? Have a browse of our top tips for entertaining at home.
Cook What You Know
“Choose one dish that you feel very comfortable making, like a simple chicken or fish recipe. Add a tossed salad, and then source a loaf of bread and some olive oil. And that’s it, you have a meal.”
Ask for Help
“You could have folks bring things, or just get them in the kitchen with you. We love to hand our guests an apron and involve them in the cooking. I grew up in a house where the kitchen was kept behind a closed door to contain the chaos of the pots and pans and heat and smoke. In our home, it’s the opposite.”
Keep Your Tablescape Simple
“I usually start with the essentials: plates and glassware, with the Always Pan and the Perfect Pot in the centre. Then I’ll sprinkle in some little flowers in vases – I don’t like to use anything too high because it blocks your view of the person sitting opposite – and a lot of candles. Every table looks beautiful when there’s a ton of tea lights scattered along it.”

Remember: You Don’t Need to Overdo It
“I grew up in a culture where you would always present your guests with too much food. I love that; I love the effort that people put into doing that. But one thing I appreciate about the west is that you can take a more casual approach to dinner, and still have just as much fun – if not more fun, because you’re not stuck feeling overwhelmed in the kitchen.”
Most Importantly, Get Talking
“I started hosting dinner parties long before I founded Our Place, and I would always come up with certain prompts to encourage people to share more about themselves. That’s what it’s all about – the people and the conversation. The food is just there to facilitate those connections. Remember that, and your dinner party will be a huge success.”
