Fresh from a trip to Maison & Objet (this year themed Take Care!), our experts from the Harrods Interior Design team Olivia Barr and Yulia Isaeva tell us just how to bring this year’s hottest old-but-new trends to your home – with a 2023 twist.

“A huge trend seen throughout the fair was ’70s-inspired fabrics and furniture shapes,” say Yulia and Oliva. “An evolution of the mid-century modern aesthetic, this iteration is softer with sculptural silhouettes such as curved sofas and fluid coffee tables combined with earthy tones and geometric prints.” How to incorporate it into your home? “Head to Gubi. Its rounded sofas and armchairs have a distinct ’70s feel, especially when combined with basket weaves, rattan and velvets."

To gloss or not to gloss? On their own, polished and lacquered surfaces have an instantly elegant feel – but it’s when they’re contrasted with matt finishes that interiors start to look more confidently curated. “To achieve this look at home, you could combine accessories in muted tones and then contrast the finishes,” Olivia and Yulia advise. “A textured wood picture frame with an ivory gloss vase and a travertine candle holder would work beautifully.” Try home accessories from Soho Home, Laetitia Rouget and Jonathan Adler for a more playful take on the trend.

It’s official: curved silhouettes and soft fabrics are here to stay. Our experts from Harrods Interior Design elaborate: “We saw a lot of curved sofas in ivory bouclé specifically, which always create a cosy, cocooning feel. They were paired with organically shaped tables – there wasn’t a straight line in sight! Organic shapes add to the asymmetric fluidity of a room and invitepeople to flow around a space.” A fitting sentiment of the design fair’s Take Care theme. Look to sofas from Gubi and Baxter to welcome the well-rounded trend into your home.

Maison confirmed that we continue to be drawn to natural textures – the bolder, the better. At the fair, many brands showcased sustainable furniture that had been manufactured from solid, raw materials and built to last. Olivia and Yulia note that natural stone, ceramics and travertine – from brands like Eichholtz – were among the most popular: “Travertine is taking over from the white Calcatta and Carrara marbles that we have seen for years. It provides a luxurious contrast to textured woods, but still retains that earthy feel.”

When it comes to fluting, more is more. The latest furniture collection from Frato sees fluting used as a sophisticated detail on cabinets, side tables and desks. “This season, we’ve used bamboo-inspired fluting to bring a sense of the Far East home. I discovered a love for the canes while traveling through Asia,” revealed Patricia Serra Santos, creative director of Frato. “In particular, I love how they add a timeless sense to contemporary pieces.”

If you want to incorporate fluting as an accent piece in your home, Olivia and Yulia note that a more fluid style is guaranteed to make a statement: “We’re seeing organic versions, where the ribs are turning into curved contours showcased on plaster table bases, lighting, decorative rugs and vases.” Inspired?
