The Best Men’s Coats for Practical Dressers

As the cooler months unfold, you’ll encounter plenty of opportunities to showcase your outerwear. One style doesn’t fit all. For city living, it could be the trench. When traversing the great outdoors, a down-rich puffer is close to mandatory. Meet this winter’s go-to coats to invest in ahead of time.

The Long Coat

The perfect partner to tailored suits and casual attire, an overcoat’s strength lies in its fit. The consensus: it should be roomy enough for a blazer, sweatshirt or denim jacket underneath. Overcoats are designed to wear over something else. This year, they’re long in length and classic in look. One established offshoot is the camel coat. Originally fabricated with camel hair, it’s now more common to find it in fine wool, cashmere and other blends, exemplified to great success at Burberry.

The Puffer Jacket

Semantics aside, there is little material difference between the down coat and puffer jacket, which occupy common ground in their abilities to insulate and protect. Faced with winter’s icy reception, the likes of Moose Knuckles, Canada Goose, and Moncler follow a tried-and-tested formula of style with substance and utility fixtures wherever you need them.

The Pea Coat

With modish undertones that feel retro and contemporary all at once, this year’s pea coat nods to a like-minded sophistication as your classic tailored overcoat. Generally, you can expect pea coats to be double-breasted, slightly oversized, and constructed with superior quality wool or cashmere – all good things, all at once.

The Trench Coat

After more than a century at the forefront of British design, the trench coat is just as much of a staple in a man’s autumn wardrobe. In gabardine, it’s the bread and butter of Burberry, whose title as an early pioneer is well known. Elsewhere at JW Anderson and Maison Margiela, you’ll find updates to the blueprint including deconstruction and practical hoods.
