Easy but Stylish Holiday Outfit Ideas for Men

Feature: Long Read
Words by TONY WILKES

There’s plenty to look forward to about summer holidays: blue skies, much-needed sun, cultural sites and foodie experiences. For those who are sartorially inclined, there’s also the wardrobe. Escaping to warmer climes is an opportunity to let loose – muted staples and boardroom tailoring giving way to colour, tropical prints and beachy accessories. Here are some ideas around what you might pack for your next summer getaway.

Summer Knitwear

A contradiction in terms, right? While a summer holiday doesn’t generally call for rollnecks or chunky layers, knitwear can still be your best friend – even when hitting the beach. A crocheted polo shirt like those by Oliver Cheshire’s brand Ché are cool (in every sense) and can be easily worn over a tank top, T-shirt or nothing at all. Crochet will also add textural interest to your outfits, and is perfect for the day to evening transition.

Elsewhere, look out for lightweight-knit polos and cardigans in breathable cotton and silk. You’ll find excellent options from Orlebar Brown, Frescobol Carioca and Sunspel this season. When it comes to styling, neutral shades offer a great blank canvas around which to add colour and print. Swim shorts from Vilebrequin, Etro and Derek Rose are some of our favourites – and are smart enough to double as shorts away from the shore.

Pattern on Pattern

The most fuss-free of all summer outfit options is surely the trusty co-ord. You can’t go wrong with a vibrant set from Love Brand & Co., Commas or Loewe Paula’s Ibiza – the latter is inspired by the famous Balearic boutique and delivers vacation vibes through and through. Such pieces will fit the bill for any summer party, too.

To complete the look? Whether exploring a new city or heading to the beach, you’ll need a carry-all tote. In terms of footwear, the choice is all yours. While sneakers are needed for serious exploring, sleek leather sandals by way of TOM FORD or espadrilles via Zegna or Brunello Cucinelli are ideal for trips to the beach or the local eatery. Easy.

Why a Linen Suit Is a Summer Occasion Essential

Versatile and timeless, a linen suit is all you need to navigate the season – at home and abroad. Here are some of the best.

Exploring the Town

There will be times when your itinerary calls for something a little less beachy: a lunch or dinner out, perhaps, or simply reading the paper over your morning espresso. We’re not talking full suiting here, though. Simply team a summery shirt with a pair of well-tailored linen trousers and you’re onto a winner. Jacquemus, Dries Van Noten and Eton via its high-summer collection (each shirt is made from 45 parts and 12,000 stitches) are delivering great options up top. Southwards, straight-leg trousers with drawstring waists provide the most comfort – especially if you choose naturally breathable fabrics like cotton or linen.

For an additional flourish, you could always add jewellery. In the summer months, the go-to piece is a bracelet braided from leather, strung with beads, or cast in an artfully simple band of silver or gold. Le Gramme, Nialaya Jewellery and Tateossian are names to remember.

Holiday Accessories

You’ve got your tote bag: roomy and practical, but very aesthetic. But the list of holiday essentials doesn’t stop there. Sunglasses, for one. Jacques Marie Mage, Oliver Peoples or Ray-Ban. Headwear is also a must: a classic straw hat or wear-everywhere cap will do the trick. If we’re talking sun protection, remember your sunscreen. Shiseido’s SPF 50+ is non-greasy and works to moisturise your face while protecting your skin from damage.

And no list of packing essentials is complete without a summery fragrance. You’ll find an array of exclusive gems at Harrods, from Loewe’s Doré Eau de Parfum (selling fast) to Escentric Molecules’ H01 – designed exclusively for us. Acqua Di Parma has some brilliant options that will transport you to sunny climes, even when at home. To smell them in person, visit our Fragrance & Grooming space in Menswear on the Second Floor.
