Julianne Moore’s Beauty Rules

Feature: Long Read
Words by: Funmi Fetto

Julianne Moore has a glittering film career that  spans four decades. Highlights include her turn as an adult-movie star; Amber Waves, in Boogie Nights; as Laura Brown, a depressed ’50s housewife, in The Hours, a Virginia Woolf-inspired adaption; and in Still Alice, where Moore plays a linguistics professor diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s. Yet, not only adored as an Oscar-winning actress,  Moore is also recognised for her activism and being the face of Hourglass Cosmetics.

“Hourglass  is so generous, so inclusive, so purpose-driven.  The first campaign I did with them –  the Ambient Foundation – I shot with my daughter. It was the sweetest thing, all about relationships, and I was so touched by it. And then the Unlocked Lipstick campaign, which launched earlier this year. All the people I was paired with were people with purpose. It is such an interesting way to look at beauty, so yes, I’ve been really impressed by that.”

The Unlocked campaign Moore refers to was a groundbreaking moment for Hourglass. Carmine, the go-to red pigment for the beauty industry which gives red lipstick its bright-crimson hue, is traditionally created by crushing thousands of female insects. However, Hourglass created an alternative, the patent-pending vegan  Red 0, which is – like the rest of the brand – cruelty-free without compromising on the intensity one would expect from a great red lip. Not only did this seal Hourglass’ reputation for innovation but also activism; a thread that speaks directly to Moore and the brand partnership. Read on to discover Julianne Moore's wellness routines, essential beauty products, and life lessons that have carried her to where she is today.

I start the day by… having two huge glasses of water with chlorophyll drops in it because somebody told me a long time ago that it was good for my skin. So now it's a habit. And then I have two big cups of coffee, which I guess probably counteracts it!

I always … feel better when I do yoga. When I'm not working, I do it three times a week.  When I'm working, I'm lucky if I do it once a week. There were periods during the pandemic where I did it six days a week and it really got me through, and my body felt phenomenal. It's the one thing that I've done physically that I've stuck with. It’s been 22 years.

Moore’s Approach to Beauty

My three ride or die products are…   Hourglass’ Equilibrium Intensive Hydrating Eye Balm. It is the best. I absolutely love it – it is a really great product. The other one is the Hourglass Phantom Volumizing Glossy Balm in ‘Slip’ that I made (make-up artist) Kay Montano give to me. It’s really hydrating, and the colour is great. I have a hard time with colours because things go orange on me. Or too pink. But this is a very good neutral. The third product I’d say I can’t live without is Epsom salts. I love them and I go through bags and bags of them. They just make me feel better.

I will never not…  regret destroying my eyebrows. I shouldn't have plucked them. I went after my eyebrows several times. It started as a teenager and I grew them back in, and then I ruined them again in the nineties and just kept going.

I repeat purchase…  black sweaters, jeans, and lip balm. I buy a lot of lip balm. I'm so happy when I finish a lip balm because that means I can get it out of my life! Because you know you always have too many of them.

I feel my most beautiful when… the wonderful Kay Montano does my make-up.

Life Lessons with Julianne

My daughter taught me…  what natural beauty really is. She's so beautiful. She really is. I look at her face and I just think she's glorious looking but she’s beautiful on the inside too.

I never knew… that my childhood interest in doing plays after school would lead to such an interesting career. It’s kind of amazing.

My best advice is…  to be consistent in your behaviour toward others and be persistent in pursuit of your goals.
