3 Women Designing Your Dream Engagement Rings

FEATURE: LONG READ
Words by ELEANOR HIBBERD

Not so long ago, the process of designing, crafting, and choosing engagement rings was a space, perhaps unexpectedly, occupied by men. From design to purchase, a ring may not have reached a woman’s knowing eye until the fateful time of proposal. It’s little surprise, then, that today’s fine-jewellery landscape looks a little different – after all, women know what women want. Whether you’re looking to choose a piece of your own or point your partner in the right direction, allow us to introduce you to three women in the know at some of the world’s most iconic jewellery houses.

Lorraine Schwartz

A name that needs little introduction, third-generation diamond dealer Lorraine Schwartz has become one of the most celebrated jewellers in the world – highly coveted for engagement rings thanks to endorsements from Beyoncé, Blake Lively, Kourtney Kardashian, and more. Known for her designs that hone in on the essential beauty of the stone with delicate settings and bands, her influence on the industry cannot be underestimated. “I think jewellery today has changed because of female designers. They play a huge role in putting their taste into what they choose – as a woman, I like to see a stone that has a softness about it, an elegance, and fits the hand beautifully,” Lorraine tells us. When choosing an engagement ring, she points out, there’s much more to play for than what you think works on paper. No matter what size stone you can afford, for example, remember to consider what shape and dimensions best suit your hand. “If you have long fingers, you want something a little more elongated. If you have short fingers, you may want something more rounded or square,” she advises. “We take the time to know who the client is, what they are looking for, and what stone fits them perfectly – whether they’re looking for something a little more sporty, or something more elaborate in the design.”

"As a modern woman, I think we want our engagement rings to be something that we don’t tire from; they have to feel clean, elegant, and timeless"

Rebecca Hawkins
Head of design at Boodles

Boodles – a family-owned house now in its sixth generation – has long been synonymous with exceptional diamonds. When it comes to engagement rings, the brand’s head of design Rebecca Hawkins knows how women tick. “Female designers know instinctively how to design something that combines beauty, longevity, modernity, and practicality to work with an active lifestyle. Women wear their engagement rings all the time and so the designs need to reflect that.” Her top recommendation? The house’s exclusive Ashoka cut, a diamond renowned for its individuality. Taking a rectangular shape with rounded corners, and boasting 62 facets to give the illusion of appearing larger than it is, it can be achieved by only one in five diamonds. “The Ashoka cut has become such a popular choice. Besides the unique beauty of the stone, I think one of the reasons is that it can sit low on the finger,” she explains. A practical design choice for daily wear.

"Men shopping alone tend to be more conservative in their choice, while women will approach it with confidence. They’re looking for elements of individuality"

Victoria Reynolds
Chief gemologist at Tiffany & Co.

Part of the Tiffany & Co. family since 1987, where she began in the custom design department, Victoria Reynolds has carved out an important segment of the house’s history, becoming the first woman to hold the title of chief gemologist. “I have loved gemstones my entire life, and as a woman who also loves wearing them, I believe they are incredibly personal and unique to the individual who owns them,” Reynolds said in an interview with Tatler Asia. “Jewellery doesn’t look the same on everybody; it depends on the person and how they carry themselves. Jewellery showcases the personality of the woman who wears it.” A compelling argument in favour of choosing your own ring – or something to bear in mind if you’re shopping for a partner. To many hopeful recipients, nothing could outshine the house’s iconic Tiffany Setting, but there are plenty of alternatives to consider if you’re less traditional in your taste. Look out for the Schlumberger rings for a unique take on engagement designs, offering distinctive styles for the more adventurous bride, while still giving you your little-blue-box moment.
