Duvet Days: How to Nest in Style

Feature: Long Read
Words by Emilie Dock

The people have spoken. The 2022 Oxford Word of the Year, chosen for the first time by public vote, is ‘goblin mode’. And while Oxford defines the term as ‘a type of behaviour which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy’, we see it as a golden ticket to a guilt-free day in bed.

It’s winter after all, meaning staying in for self-care Sundays or movie marathons isn't just acceptable, it’s downright encouraged. Plus, after a busy festive season, doesn’t the idea of a duvet day sound like heaven?Call it a delicious antidote to the tired ‘New Year, New Me’ cliché: this January, we eschew our to-do lists, pull the covers over our heads, and do nothing at all.

The Bed

To watch an entire season of Too Hot to Handle or spend hours scrolling social media you must create an irresistibly comfortable and adaptable environment. Sheets should be sumptuous, breathable, and easy to wash – even the most seasoned of bed-diners are prone to spillages; opt for cotton. You’ll need a variety of cushions to prop you up to various degrees of horizontal. And a selection of blankets, not just for cosiness, but also to wear as a cloak for quick excursions to the kitchen.

The Outfit

Lustrous lounging is nothing without a Bridget Jones-approved outfit, aka the most comfortable pyjamas in your closet. Once again, layering is key. You should always feel warm and toasty; a robe offers a chicer alternative to the blanket cloak (it depends how ‘goblin’ you’re feeling). It’s also wise to have an eye mask to hand just in case you fancy a mid-afternoon snooze and can’t be bothered to draw the curtains.

The Ambience

The vibe you’re going for is minimal-effort at-home spa. Light a few candles on your bedside table (within blowing-out distance) or, if you’re prone to naps, opt for a diffuser instead (safety first!). You might also consider some low-level lighting to avoid straining your eyes from screen glare. Last but not least, treat yourself to a sheet mask or mini peel; goblins deserve pampering too.

The Snacks

Eating in bed is a controversial topic, but if you do find yourself peckish on a duvet day, remember this: Nigella Lawson keeps an emergency stash of condiments in her nightstand. Do with that information what you will. Breakfast in bed is allowed, even aspirational; tea in bed is also widely practised. So, what’s a cheeky biscuit between sheets?
