Cosy Autumn Décor Ideas for Every Room

Feature: Long Read
Words by Bridie Newman and Emilie Dock

Hear that? The wind blowing through the trees, the crunching of leaves underfoot, the patter of raindrops on the window… It’s autumn calling us back inside and we, for one, are ready to hunker down. Of course, there’s no finer place to embrace the cosiness than at home. So, as the season for fireside movie nights, leisurely Sunday roasts and cocktail parties stretches before us, we’ve curated our best autumn décor ideas to turn your home into a colour-rich, cocooning hideaway.

As well as inspirational edits curated by our stylists by room, you’ll find quick, easy, transformative tips from Olivia Barr, senior designer at Harrods Interior Design – from lighting hacks to how to transition your dining table and incorporate flowers into the home.

The Living Room

We all know that texture and layering are key to creating a cosy ambience, but sticking to a planned colour palette will ensure your autumn living room décor looks chic not cluttered. In keeping with the ongoing ’70s trend and inspired by the season’s trees, we’ve opted for vibrant shades of orange, deep greens and rich browns.

These complementary tones, seen here on soft cashmere throws by Saved NY and Ralph Lauren Home and plush patterned cushions from La DoubleJ and Missoni Home, introduce an element of aesthetic warmth. “Pack away the light linens and replace them with rich velvets and rust-toned cushions” advises Olivia. Complement them with Neill Strain Floral Couture arrangements (available on the Lower Ground Floor) to ensure your space feels like a sophisticated salon.

Styling Tip from Harrods Interior Design

As the leaves turn, replicate the changing mood with some autumnal blooms. Add a rich-hued Vandas orchid to your coffee table or drape dried stems like burnt-orange bunny tails, foxtail pampas grass and eucalyptus across the mantlepiece.

The Dining Room

A richly decorated table topped with delicious food is the time-honoured way to celebrate the season with friends and family. Whether you’re inviting them round for a bountiful Halloween or Thanksgiving feast or a casual winter soup, placing a gorgeous autumn wreath or floral arrangements on your table will make those gatherings feel extra special.

The crafty among us may turn to pumpkins, snips from the garden and candles for their seasonal decoration, but for a truly showstopping display, Neill Strain Floral Couture (Lower Ground Floor) should be your port of call in the dining room, too. The team are on hand to help you design bouquets, wreaths and garlands from an impressive selection of seasonal blooms and rare exotic flowers.

For us, autumn-winter feasting isn’t a moment for formality, but an opportunity for relaxed dining with your nearest and dearest. Omitting the classic tablecloth immediately makes the look feel less formal, as does mixing crockery and glassware from different brands and collections, from Prada to Bordallo Pinheiro.

STYLING TIP FROM HARRODS INTERIOR DESIGN

"Transition your summer woven placemats into autumn by swapping the light linens with deep-orange napkins and clear glass with jewel-toned glasses."

The Kitchen

The warm, beating heart of the home, the kitchen is often where friends and family congregate, if only to sneak a taste of whichever warming winter recipe the cook is rustling up for dinner. To make the space feel extra cosy and inviting, then, try giving your kitchen a seasonal makeover. Choose chunky earthenware crockery, a pitcher vase filled with fiery dried foliage and bowls artfully arranged with pumpkins, pomegranate and other seasonal produce. With its deep, honey-like tone, Le Creuset’s new Nectar cookware collection feels especially fitting for fall; leave a few pieces out even when you’re not using them for a welcome pop of colour.

STYLING TIP FROM HARRODS INTERIOR DESIGN

"From the leaves to the low golden sun, I’m always inspired by warm tones found in nature at this time of the year. Bring them into the kitchen by layering natural materials, raw woods and tones of rich orange and amber with gold accents."

The Bedroom

It’s your comfort zone and private retreat, so it makes sense that your bedroom should be the most sumptuous space in the house. Create a haven for relaxation with the finest luxury bedding. Silk pillowcases, Egyptian Gyza cotton sheets, cashmere throws, quilted bedspreads, fluffy duvets – these are what dreams are made of. Important nowhere more than the bedroom is lighting as Olivia tells us “It’s essential for softening the mood. Add varying heights of candles or change the bulbs to your lamps to a warmer tone to evoke a cosy feel”.
