75 Years Young: Bulgari’s Serpenti Marks a Milestone

PARTNERSHIP
Words by Eleanor Hibberd

With origins tracing all the way back to Ancient Greece and Egypt, the hypnotic snake has long been a popular motif in jewellery design. But there is one name in particular that comes to mind when referencing this sinuous emblem – Bulgari. The house unfurled an instant icon when it released the first Serpenti watch in 1948; today, it celebrates its 75th anniversary with an exclusive pop-up at Harrods, shedding its skin once more with a host of new creations to mark the occasion.

There are few jewellery collections that can claim more iconicity than the Bulgari Serpenti. Since its conception in 1948, the reptilian emblem has slinked a path through history, coiling itself around the wrists and decolletages of the world’s most revered women. The secret to its success? Much like its muse, it sheds its skin at every turn to reinvent itself for a new generation.

A polysemous symbol dating back to the Ancient Greeks, said to represent strength, metamorphosis, wisdom and eternal love, the serpent has taken many forms at Bulgari. Since its first iteration as a jewellery watch with a winding bracelet and square dial, it has evolved to span multiple identities under the Serpenti name. Among its most beloved incarnations are the Tubogas timepieces – which kept the Serpenti’s flexible bracelet but gained a snakehead dial – and the more contemporary Serpenti Viper jewellery, geometric designs for everyday wear. So far-reaching was its influence, the Serpenti even slithered into the neighbouring world of fashion with a line of accessories that are, today, counted among the most coveted bags in the world.

As the collection reaches its 75-year milestone, the Serpenti remains as fresh and invigorated as the day it was born. In celebration of the anniversary, Bulgari has unveiled three new hypnotic creations, which pay homage to some of its earliest designs from the 1950s. Comprising a necklace, a ring and a pair of earrings, the set showcases the inventive ‘pallini’ technique, which creates the serpent’s tactile, flexible body with tiny golden beads.
