The Ultimate Guide to Healthy Skin

Feature: Partnership
Words by Nateisha Scott

Skincare in 2024 is all about the simple life. Of course, spend an hour on TikTok and you’ll likely fall down a skincare content hole detailing 11 or 13-step routines, layering multiple serums here and skincare slugging there. But while everyone has different concerns and is searching for their #skincaregoals, it doesn’t mean you need to overcomplicate yours to achieve it. In fact, for Dr Rabia Malik, it’s the simple approach that matters.

“A refined daily skincare routine is the foundation for healthy, radiant skin. I find consistency with cleansing, hydrating, and protection establishes a protective shield and resilience against daily stressors,” she says, “a simple skincare routine is a prescription for a lifetime of healthy glowing skin.” That said, we’re leaving the complex routines in 2023 and pushing for fewer steps and greater results in 2024. Focusing on the fundamental steps that include cleansing, treating, moisturising, and protecting, we have a routine guide for you. Granted there will be times when your complexion may require some extra TLC with a targeted in-clinic treatment or facial, but below we have your daily skincare routine covered.

Decorte
Cleanse
Decorte AQ Meliority Radiance Repair Foaming Face Wash

The first important step in your skincare routine is cleansing. Between a single, double, or triple cleanse (save the latter for a full glam moment) you should cleanse both morning and evening. “Cleansing is the foundation of optimal skin health. It’s essential for removing pollutants, excess sebum, and make-up that accumulate throughout the day. Cleansing effectively helps to prevent breakouts, promotes cellular turnover, and preserves the skin’s natural radiance,” says Dr Malik. A cleansing standout is Decorte’s AQ Meliority Radiance Repair Foaming Face Wash. Its serum-like consistency turns into a non-drying, cushiony, velvet foam when lathered in hands, leaving skin soft and supple. The cleanser is packed with brilliant skincare actives including antioxidants sandalwood, benifuki, and murasaki cha extract, double peptides hailed to moisturise skin and promote collagen production, and vitamin C for brightening. But more importantly, it is adored for its moisturise-binding ingredients that include squalene, phospholipids, and glycerin to plump, balance, and restore.

La Prairie
Treat
La Prairie Skin Caviar Liquid Lift Serum

Consider your serum(s) as the step that targets and treats your concerns. Thanks to its lightweight and often water-like consistency, serums can easily penetrate skin, reaching the deepest layers and delivering a high concentration of active ingredients to areas of concern for visibly greater results. A restorative serum high on our skincare list is La Prairie’s Skin Caviar Liquid Lift Serum. Formulated with the Exclusive Cellular Complex, an exemplary ingredient that is not only kind to skin but intensely nourishes and revitalises skin from within to reveal a radiant glow. The serum (used morning and night) is also formulated with caviar premier, a mimetic composition made up of lipids, proteins, amino acids, and nucleotides to support and volumise skin, resulting in a lifted and firm complexion. You may also want to immerse yourself in an indulgent and sensorial experience with a La Prairie facial treatment available in our Beauty Suites, Lower Ground Floor to help enhance your skincare ritual.

Prada Moisturiser
Moisturise
Prada Augmented Skin Cream

Regardless of your skin type or concerns, a moisturiser is essential. For Dr Malik, moisturisers “keep skin hydrated and maintain the integrity of your skin’s barrier, preventing dehydration and premature fine lines.” But the key is to find the right one for your skin and that’s where we would recommend Prada Beauty’s Augmented Skin ‘The Cream’ because of its adaptable formulation. A refillable day and night cream celebrated for its patented adopto.gn smart technology, it adapts to skin in real-time. Therefore if your complexion is exposed to oxidative stress, the high concentration of actives will work to protect skin. It’s also a dream to work into your skin as the gel-to-balm cream absorbs in seconds without leaving an uncomfortable feeling on the surface. That’s a forward-thinking moisturiser if you ever did see one.

Paula's Choice
Protect
Paula’s Choice Youth-Extending Daily Hydrating Fluid SPF50

SPF protection is non-negotiable. But we do understand how tricky it can be to find the right one that doesn’t cause breakouts, feel sticky on your skin, or leave a white cast. So we’ve tried and tested what’s on offer, so you don’t have to and Paula’s Choice Youth-Extending Daily Hydrating Fluid SPF50 is a top contender. First things first, the water-light fluid doesn’t clog pores, leading to unwanted breakouts. Secondly, the matte-satin finish dries clear on your skin avoiding any ghost-like casualties after application. More importantly, the synthetic broad-spectrum UV filters and multi-antioxidant blend protect skin, deflecting harmful UV rays and boosting skin’s protection from environmental stressors. You’ll also find that SPF is formulated with oat extract and green tea to calm any skin sensitivity and redness. That’s a tick, tick, and tick in our books.

Now if you’re looking to enhance your skincare routine there are a few additional steps that experts recommend you can introduce into your routine to prompt greater results. These fall into the categories of introducing a toner, exfoliator, a targeted eye and lip treatment (as skin in these areas are delicate), as well as a face mask and facial tool for those much-needed self-care moments.

Grey
Exfoliation

How often you exfoliate is truly dependent on your skin’s needs and concerns. Oilier complexions may need to exfoliate two or three times a week whereas sensitive and dry skin types, once a week. Equally, if you have blemish-prone skin, introducing a gentle daily exfoliant can transform your skin’s look and feel. Exfoliating after cleansing can kill bacteria, and impurities and sweep away dead skin cells. One making its rounds on TikTok is Elemis’ Dynamic Resurfacing Facial Pads. The brilliant 2-in-1 chemical and physical exfoliant is infused with lactic acid, shea butter, and castor oil to smooth and brighten skin without disrupting the moisture barrier. If you enjoy the feeling of a physical exfoliant but want to leave the abrasive nature of one behind reach for Ranavat’s Imperial Glow Smoothing Facial Polish. A gentle balm formulated with finely milled rice powder and almond oil, it’ll remove dead skin cells and boost radiance in one use.

Toner

Kiehl's, Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner, 500ml, £57.50

Toners are often labelled as skincare accessories and often swapped in and out of routines throughout the season. However, as a skin-balancing step, they are crucial, regardless of your skin type or concern. Toners help to reset and reintroduce the hydration and moisture into your skin post-cleanse. Often water-based and formulated with soothing extracts they act as a calming veil over skin preparing it for the next step. If you're introducing a toner into your routine try Kiehl’s Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner. Crafted with phytonutrients from calendula petals, the toner calms skin while star ingredients such as great burdock root and allantoin comfort and moisturise skin – a great option for blemish-prone and sensitive skin thanks to its oil- and alcohol-free formula.

Eyes and Lips

Lancôme Absolue L’Extrait, 15ml, £292 & Dr Barbara Sturm Lip Balm, 125ml, £40

“Eye and lip treatments are vital for protecting and rejuvenating the delicate skin, which is also often one of the first areas of your face to show signs of ageing. I often recommend specialised formulations that hydrate, firm, and protect,” says Dr Malik. Our vote then would be Lancôme’s Absolue L’Extrait Eye Cream as a soothing and hydrating eye spa ritual you can enjoy from the comfort of your bathroom. Formulated with the Absolue Blackbiosis – a biotechnological process using rose – it has anti-inflammatory properties to calm and reduce discolouration as well as prevent moisture loss and free radicals harming skin. As for your lips, introduce an intensely hydrating lip balm such as Dr Barbara Sturm’s Lip Balm. A lightweight, non-sticky, and colourless lip treatment, it conditions lips with a cocktail of hydrating oils, butter, and waxes including shea butter, cacao butter, coconut oil, and avocado while providing long-lasting moisture that you won't need to re-apply for hours.

Facial Tool

Kama Ayurveda, Kansa Wand, £64

To achieve a sculpted and lifted look consider tools such as Kama Ayurveda’s Kansa Wand. A stimulating massage facial tool inspired by ancient Ayurvedic practices, the tool helps to drain toxins through lymphatic drainage and reduce puffiness, improve blood circulation, and release any tension built up in your facial muscles. The tool itself is made from the finest wood with a gold alloy made from copper and tin to cool skin and intensify the effects. Each morning or evening, you’ll want to glide the tool on moisturised skin along your jawline and down your neck, under your eyes towards your temple, and across your forehead, guiding upwards towards your hairline. If you have any areas of tension, you can use the smaller end of the tool and gently press into the area to help relieve it. An ideal self-care addition to your routine.
