10 of the Best Highlighters for a radiant glow

Feature: Long Read
Words By Amelia Bell

One of the hardest working tools in your beauty bag, your highlighter can single handedly transform your skin in a matter of seconds, leaving it luminous and radiant. Aside from imparting a subtle glow onto cheeks, it can also be blended with your foundation, used as an eyeshadow, or even in place of a lip gloss. As for finding the right one? From the just-launched formulas promising a dewy aesthetic to those that deliver natural effulgence, scroll for the best highlighters, and their glow factor, below.

How to Apply Your  Highlighter

First up, a quick refresher on highlighter application. Of course, where you apply yours is entirely subjective, but as Jamie Genevieve, the make-up artist, and brains behind Vieve points out, it’s usually centred around the high points of your face. “I love to bring my highlighter over my brow bone, cheekbones, bridge of the nose, and cupid’s bow,” she says. You can also use your highlighter strategically to brighten certain areas. “My top tip to brighten dark circles and make your eyes look instantly bigger and brighter is to place a dot of powder highlighter to the inner corners,” Genevieve shares. “You can also add highlighter on the high points of the body like the shoulders, across your chest.”

As for specific formulas, there are a few ways to apply your liquid versus powder highlighters. “To use liquid highlighter, I recommend dabbing it on with fingertips to highlight beautiful bone structure and add dimension to an overall make-up look,” says Genevieve. “For a powder highlighter, I recommend using a brush.” This allows for a more accurate application and buildable coverage — simply sweep the powder across the high points of the face using a fluffy or fanned angle brush.

Best Natural Glow Highlighter

Pat McGrath Labs Skin Fetish Divine Glow Highlighter, £47

As you might expect from the matriarch of make-up, Dame Pat McGrath, this is no ordinary pressed highlighter. Thanks to the combination of botanical oils and micro-pearls, it offers a skin-like and soft-focus glow all while still nourishing the skin underneath. Not only does this mean avoiding any of the dreaded cakiness or dryness once synonymous with powders but it also blends seamlessly onto  skin. Tip: keep it handy in your bag for quick glow touch-ups throughout the day.

Gucci Illuminateur de Beaute Liquid Highlighter, £37

Gucci Beauty doesn’t do anything by halves and these multi-use drops are certainly no exception. Available in a universally flattering golden hue, you can apply this liquid highlighter on bare skin (post-skincare routine), mix it in with your favourite foundation, tinted moisturiser, and primer, or even use it to accentuate parts of the body like the collarbone. While some liquid highlighters can be too pigmented and intense, the ultra-fine luminous pearls reflect the light in all the right places for a finish that’s all glow and no glitter.
