Thames City

By the riverside in south-west London, there’s a sky-high apartment dressed in decadent hues and plush textures. A stone’s throw from the Tate Britain museum, Harrods Interior Design drew on elements of the modern art movement to curate this interior, combining the elegance of Pimlico-style living and the eclecticism of the Nine Elms district.

The grand entrance hall was decorated with textured walls and sculptural silhouettes inspired by the artist Henry Moore. The clients expressed that the living space would be used regularly for socialising, so the team created an immersive feel with a deep colour palette of burgundy, moss green and navy. They also incorporated objects and accessories to create intriguing talking points for guests. Each area of the room was carefully zoned to enhance its functionality, allowing for dining, socialising and relaxing to naturally occur in one space.

To create a synergy between the interiors and the view, the team carefully selected functional yet decorative pieces. A low-backed sofa was chosen to provide guests with undisturbed views of the city’s skyline. The eight-seat dining table, with its rippling marble top and chunky legs, doubles as a piece of artwork, and was positioned beside the window to create a dinner setting with a view. Surrounded by sumptuous velvet chairs with curved backs, the dining set-up invites guests to linger and enjoy the scenery.

Texture, pattern and colour are constantly interacting in the space to maintain its artistic feel. By using plaster paint on the walls and an abstract-patterned rug, the team were able to create multiple points of interest. Paired with the property’s many hidden treasures – think sparkling Baccarat crystal tableware and unique ornaments – the apartment oozes with gallery-style cool.

Incorporating soft textures was key to ensuring the space has a lived-in feel. Smooth-to-touch fabrics were chosen for the seating area and plump cushions helped create a cosy, layered feel. The generous accent chairs were incorporated because of their cocooning shape, which prioritises comfort.

When designing the bedrooms, the team focused on creating a specific mood in each one. The first was rendered in a quiet colour palette of taupe and gold that feels effortlessly luxurious. In another bedroom, various shades of grey and blue – inspired by the sky and river – were used to subtly tranquillise the mood.

In keeping with the apartment’s artistic theme, the team chose to use geometric wallpaper and a deep-red velvet headboard in the third bedroom. Industrial-style tubular metal pendant lights were chosen to further enhance the property’s broad range of art. This was continued in the final bedroom, which was designed to celebrate the bold, vibrant world of pop art. Its bright-orange headboard has an energising effect on the space, while abstract metallic wallpaper and pendant lighting inspired by a single drop of paint create a truly unique look.

Finally, the study was designed to inspire creativity and enhance productivity. The room benefits from floods of natural light and unparalleled views of the city. To enhance its connection to the outside world, a large leafy plant was added to the space. Complete with bespoke integrated storage, the study is as functional as it is striking.
